Our Christmas Gathering is back on Saturday 5 December at Kentish Town Congregational Church. The day starts with a talk by Royston Haward on the making of the Chancellor’s new Budget Box, followed by our regional AGM. In the afternoon there’s lunch, traders selling papers, leathers and other materials, a swap table for tools and books you no longer need, and some donated items for sale at low prices.
The event is also open to non-members. The Society of Bookbinders brings together people at all levels, from beginners to professionals, and the London & South Region runs workshops, talks and meetings throughout the year. If you’re interested in bookbinding, this is a good opportunity to talk to our members, hear about what the region does and find out more about the Society.

Talk: A Tale of Two Boxes
The Budget Box is one of the most recognisable boxes in the country. Royston will explain what it is, why it needed replacing, and how he came to be involved in making the Chancellor’s new despatch box. Expect plenty of technical detail, with slides covering every stage of the making. There’ll be time for questions afterwards.
Royston Haward
has been bookbinding since 1973. He has bound account books in Essex, made stamp albums in Hackney, covered fine bindings at Sangorski & Sutcliffe and conserved manuscripts at the British Library. He has taught at the London College of Printing, Camberwell College of Arts and the Royal Bindery at Windsor, and these days passes on his skills at City Lit.
