Glenn will discuss and demonstrate various techniques and styles of endpapers for a variety of book types covered in cloth, buckram and leather. These include simple and ‘made’, cloth jointed, linen reinforced, stationary, and leather jointed with suede flyleaves.

He will also explore the various ways to line the spine of the book with cotton, linen, kraft paper hollow, and leather ‘fleshings’. 

Emphasis will be made on the function of the endpapers and spine linings on how they affect the way the book functions and the pitfalls to be avoided.

Glenn Bartley

studied bookbinding at Guildford College and subsequently worked for a trade bindery in Oxford for five years. He established his own workshop in 1991 – 2017. He has won several prizes for his bindings, including the UK Designer Bookbinders Competition Mansfield Medal and the Society of Bookbinders International Competition (Fine Binding category). Elected Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in May 1999, he has bindings in many private and institutional collections worldwide
