‘The Ideal Sketchbook’ workshop with Michael Burke

This structure is modelled on the nineteenth century artists' sketchbooks and journals, similar to the ones used by Wordsworth and Ruskin. It is an honest structure made from good materials, opens beautifully and is very durable. It can be made at home with no equipment, just a few simple tools, and since it is not 'cased-in' requires very little pressing. Did you know there are many different traditional sewing methods for a text block?  Richard will talk about some of the different methods and where and when they were used.  Then, using traditional sewing frames he will teach us a selection of the different methods. An introduction to paper marbling with Jill Sellars

Participants will be provided with marbling colours, paper and the equipment required to learn how to make basic patterns. These skills can then be developed to create many traditional and innovative decorated papers. Maximum number 14, Materials cost £15. Students should bring newspaper to put on the floor, a folding drying rack, an apron and wear comfortable old shoes and clothes. Acrylic paint will be used which does not come off clothes

Workshop with Gillian Stewart: Painting and illustrating for endpapers and decorative papers

This workshop will focus on the process of responding to a text block creatively to make illustrated papers. As part of the design process, we'll cover sketches and ideation, and then several methods of painting with inks, water colours and acrylic paints. These papers can be used as endpapers or book sides, and hopefully you'll leave inspired to develop your ideas at home.
