A Warm Welcome to the Western Region

Our area covers Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, parts of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, and South Wales.

Our aim is to encourage, support and promote the art of bookbinding, and we do this by being a very active region, providing members with opportunities to improve their skills and tap into their creative juices.

Registration and details for workshops and events from our regional programme, will be sent to all regional Members 6 weeks in advance, so make sure you write a note in your diary as a reminder for the ones you would like to attend.

Western Region Official AGM business starts at 11 am followed by our guest speaker, Robin Clarke, who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of paper and the paper industry.  He will demonstrate the art of paper making - he has asked us to provide water and he will supply the bucket!  Sandwiches, wine and a table top sale, so do bring articles ready priced and named to sell or swap.

Glen Malkin: K118 Binding

2 day workshop on an adaptation of a K118 Binding. To include sewing the text block, rounding but not backing, making and shaping the boards, lining the spine, attaching the boards using cloth tabs which are secured alternately to the front and rear of the boards. The spine is covered with leather and leather inner hinges. Decorative paper covers the boards and plain paper doublures and endpapers. Diana Illingworth-Cook: Crisscross Structures

A workshop on the delightful Crisscross binding (aka The Secret Belgian Binding) with its distinctive sewn-in spine which is a structure devised by Anne Goy. The three-part cover is made first, and the sections are sewn in afterwards.  The front cover should fold completely to the back making this an ideal structure for sketchbooks. We will make both the basic and advanced models and explore the creative possibilities offered by variations of sewing patterns, threads and materials. www.owlbarnstudio.uk

Afternoon Visit to Exeter University Library

Focus of visit:  less on bindings but lots of ephemera and letters and interesting items including Ted Hughes, Leonard Basken (printer), Sion Abbey manuscript, Parish libraries, AL Rowse, RJ Lloyd (artist), Agatha Christie and some Daphne Du Maurier and Causley plus a Show and Tell from the Head Archivist.
