Philippa Räder’s Demonstration – Victorian Folder

Within the Royal Archives in Windsor Castle is a large collection of correspondence to Queen Victoria from her prime ministers and senior officials. Letters were originally pasted into blank letter books but, presumably because this format hindered retrieval of individual documents, towards the end of Victoria’s life the pages were cut out and the bindings repurposed into distinctive three-flap folders. These securely contained the loose contents while maintaining visual continuity of ‘proper’ books on the shelf. Thereafter, folders were purpose-made to the same pattern.

Drawing on her conservation-restoration treatment of the folders and research into their construction, Philippa will demonstrate how to recreate one of these robust yet elegant enclosures.
