Richard Nichols’ workshop on knife sharpening
November 9 @ 10:30 am - 4:30 pm
We will examine blade types and characteristics; English and French paring knives, lifting knives, shoe knives, spoke shave blades, scalpels, scissors, needles.
We will examine tools for sharpening; diamond blocks, oil stones, water stones, the strop. Each sharpening tool will be demonstrated and tips given on how to achieve the best cutting edge.
Participants will have time to practice sharpening their own tools by each method and in addition each person will be given a piece of pre-prepared hacksaw blade from which to make their own lifting knife.
Each person will also be given pre-prepared materials to make their own fine-hone/strop.
Please bring your own tools to sharpen (anything interesting or unique welcome too!)
In order that we have plenty to go round it would be great if some people could bring any of the following with them (but it’s not essential for everyone to bring this equipment);
Sharpening stones or tools, a small paring stone, small scraps of leather to test blade sharpness by paring, a small can of 3-in-1 oil or similar.
Cost of materials £4
