Image Sequencing for Visual Artists’ Books with Malcolm Raggett
November 6 @ 10:30 am - 3:30 pm
Recording a promising image sequence during a book-making workshop
Course summary: Visual artists and photographers use a range of skills to create a book from their artwork. One of those skills is putting multiple images into meaningful order. Malcolm will reveal different approaches to sequencing images for an artist book using his own and others’ books as examples. He will touch on the use of words with images, and show how the image sequence affects the structure of the book to create a work that is greater than its parts. Attendees will then be given a set of images to select from and create a sequence of their own that will form the basis for discussion and questions.
Attendance: the event will have both a live audience limited to 20 attendees and an online audience of up to 100. Online attendance is encouraged from anywhere in the UK or overseas. Login details and sample images will be sent electronically to online attendees a few days in advance. Online attendees should ideally print these images on A4 paper in advance of the event.
Equipment requirements: attendees will need a pair of scissors and some transparent adhesive tape.
Biography: Malcolm was taught bookbinding at school but turned to engineering and education as his career path. During this time his hobby was photography. When he retired he returned to bookbinding and combined it with photography to create increasingly unconventional books that he makes as unique objects or in limited editions. He has been tutor at Open Studio Workshops and for the Royal Photographic Society. He also takes time away from his book-making to make the Felsted Skiver leather paring machine and other tools.
Booking: The Kelly Street attendees will be charged £15 for members and £20 for non-members. The Zoom audience will not be charged. Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org by 29 October with your name, the name of the event(s) that you are interested in and whether you wish to attend in person or via Zoom.
