Glenn Bartley is a professional bookbinder and gold finisher who trained at Guildford and in Oxford. He established his own workshop in Culham, Oxfordshire in 1991, and has taught widely for both DB and SoB as well as presenting at conferences. Glenn was elected a Fellow of DB in 1999 and won the DB Bookbinding Competition – Silver Medal – in 1996, and the Society of Bookbinders Fine Binding prize in 2005. His work is in many collections, both private and public. He is currently the Senior Bookbinder at the Royal Bindery in Windsor Castle, working on a variety of projects for the Royal Household and the Royal Collection. He also manages the five apprentices on the Queen’s Bindery Apprenticeship Scheme and enjoys passing on his
skills and experience.
Glenn will discuss and demonstrate a variety of techniques and styles for
Lining and preparing the spines of books to be covered in cloth, buckram and leather.
Particular emphasis will be made on how the book functions and the pitfalls to be
avoided. He will then similarly demonstrate headcaps in a similar way including treatment of
hand-sewn and machine-made head bands, and moulded headcaps.
Lots of hints and tips along the way
