Fore Edge Painting Masterclass with Martin Frost: A Magic Secret Book-art
October 2 @ 10:30 am - 3:30 pm
Course Summary: an opportunity to learn how to make your own ‘vanishing’ book painting
Course Details: fore-Edge Painting is a British book-art practiced for centuries by a few binders and artists. These curious secret paintings are hidden under the gilded page edges in such a way that they can only be seen by fanning the book. Martin is currently the only practitioner offering workshops and, having created 3500 examples, will show the technique he has used for the last 50 years. The craft has been declared as ‘critically endangered’ by the British HERITAGE CRAFTS ASSOCIATION who awarded Martin ‘Maker of the Year’ for 2017. He has also been awarded the MBE for sustaining and promoting the art. His work has recently been featured in a number of national magazines, the radio, the popular TV ‘One Show’, ‘Sunday Brunch’, ‘The Antiques Road Trip’ and the American network CNN. Recent commissions include Venice Crafts Biennale, Amsterdam Crafts and the Royal Library in Copenhagen. Examples of this rare book art will be on display at the workshop.
Specific skills and techniques that will be taught in the course: students will be shown the correct way to prepare the book and materials, plan the image, apply the paint and finally wipe the edge to enable the painting to magically vanish. Students need to be able to handle small brushes but not necessarily be accomplished artists
Materials students should bring: watercolour paints and a selection of brushes (sizes 4-8), mixing plate, small water pot, pencil, ruler, sheets of A4 paper, and some ideas as to their preferred image (the fanned edge is a slim 4:1 format)
Materials for sale: students can bring their own suitable gilt-edged books, however A5 gilt-edged blank books and an 8 page manual are available at £40 and Fore edge Painting Clamps will be on loan or purchase for £60, payable to the tutor during the course.
Booking: numbers limited to 8 students. There is a standard workshop charge of £20 for members and £25 for non-members. Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org before 31 August 2021 with your name and the name of the event(s) that you are interested in.
