Dominic Riley’s workshop on leather inlays
11th January 2020
This workshop will introduce you to the intricate world of leather inlays. The wonderful painted inlay was developed in the last twenty years by European bookbinders, and has been adopted with enthusiasm by several UK binders to great effect. A shape of leather is removed from the cover of the bound book, and a second, smaller shape of contrasting leather (which may be textured or tooled) is inlaid into the space. The edges of the gap are painted with acrylic to add a dash of colour. We will then make a solid inlay, where the inlay fills exactly the removed shape. This technique calls for great accuracy and neatness, and the results are superb.
