Demonstration – Glenn Bartley: All About Endpapers

Glenn will discuss and demonstrate, various techniques and styles for making endpapers, for a variety of styles of books to be covered in cloth, buckram and leather.
These include simple and ‘made’, cloth jointed, linen reinforced, stationary, and leather jointed with suede flyleaves will all be demonstrated and discussed. There will be particular emphasis on the function of the endpapers on how the book opens and the pitfalls to be avoided, and also the different techniques for ‘putting down’. Lots of hints and tips along the way…
Glenn Bartley is a professional bookbinder and gold finisher who trained at Guildford and in Oxford. He established his own workshop in Culham, Oxfordshire in 1991, and has taught widely for both DB and SoB as well as presenting at conferences. Elected a Fellow of DB in 1999, he won the DB Bookbinding Competition – Silver Medal – in 1996, and the Society of Bookbinders Fine Binding prize in 2005.
His work is in many collections, both private and public, both in this country and in the US, Canada, South Africa, France and Germany.
In early 2017, after 26 years of self-employment, he embarked on a new adventure as Bookbinder at The Royal Bindery in Windsor Castle. A year later he was promoted to Senior Bookbinder and now also manages the six apprentices on the Queen’s Bindery Apprenticeship Scheme and enjoys passing on his skills and experience.
