Kathy Abbot is an eminent bookbinder.  Helen Kendall, with the support of the SoB Education and Training Committee, has arranged for Kathy to provide a two day binding workshop in March.

    Clip-on-Cover Binding in Vellum

During this two-day course, you will learn how to make a blank book with a vellum ‘Clip-on-cover Binding’ – one of the structures devised by Kathy Abbott for her work with the group Tomorrow’s Past*

This vellum-covered conservation binding is fully reversible, opens completely flat and is perfect for making at home with limited tools or equipment.  The cover literally clips on to a primary wrapper, so if it gets dirty or damaged, you can simply replace it with no intervention on the text-block.

 

What to bring

  • A sharp pencil (preferable a propelling pencil)
  • Eraser
  • Clip-point/boot/Cobbler’s knife
  • 30cm/12” Steel ruler
  • Fine pointed bonefolder
  • A Teflon folder
  • A brass folder (if you have one)
  • Scalpel and 10A blades/sharp craft knife
  • Small pair of sharp scissors
  • Spring-loaded dividers
  • A small set square
  • An engineer’s/carpenter’s square (‘L’ square)
  • Fine pricker/bodkin/bradawl (for making small holes)
  • Darning needles (size 5-9)
  • A pricking cradle (if you have one)
  • Pair of tweezers
  • A Japanese screw punch (if you have one)
  • A 1cm/1/2” wide flat hog hair paintbrush
  • EVA or Reversible PVA
  • Apron

 Kathy will be bringing all papers, vellum, Fraynot, Bondina,blotting paper, Melinex and leather for ties.

The Lit and Phil can provide cutting mats, pressing boards and weights.If you are short of some tools we can share around so just bring what you can.

Background

Kathy Abbott served a four-year apprenticeship in bookbinding and then gained a Higher National Diploma from the London College of Printing, London (UK) followed by a BA (Hons) degree in Bookbinding from Roehampton University, Surrey (UK). She teaches advanced level Fine Binding at the City Lit, London and conducts many other workshops across the UK and overseas. Kathy opened her own bookbinding workshop in London in 1997, where she specializes in Islamic book conservation, western book conservation and contemporary fine binding, and is also a partner in Benchmark Bindery, established in 2009 with Tracey Rowledge. She is a founder member of Tomorrow’s Past, an international bookbinding collective and is the author of Bookbinding: A step-by-step guide, published by the Crowood Press in 2010.

Her work is held in both private and public collections and her work is exhibited widely.

*Tomorrow’s Past is the name of an international bookbinding collective that make modern conservation bindings for antiquarian books. The name of the group comes from this quote of the influential binder Edgar Mansfield: “Surely it is better to create tomorrow’s past than to repeat today’s”.

The group have exhibited their work at the Antiquarian Bookfair, Olympia, London, UK; the Paris Bookfair, at the SOB conferences in Warwick, at the Aram Gallery, London, UK and at CODEX in California, USA.
