Christmas event

December 2 @ 10:30 am - 3:30 pm

Keynote Speaker: Cheryl Porter

Title of Talk: A history of the restoration of an Italian library and the international involvement in its saving.

The talk will examine the various problems we confronted when we first saw the library, including mouldy books turned to black slime, and mummified rats. Some of the – more than one hundred – historic binding classes, held over the thirty+ years of the project will be shown. Many SOB members have taught and attended these classes, and we have all benefitted from the interaction of the broad mix of participants – art historians, librarians, book historians, interested amateurs, and of course, bookbinders – with the incredible skills and understanding of structures that binders have. The talk will emphasise the great benefits of meeting and being able to study historic bindings together.
