Christmas Event and Talks: Decorated Papers in a Historic Context: how papers form an integral part of the story of objects – Victoria Hall and Yvonne Lewis

December 7 @ 10:30 am - 3:30 pm

£20

Date: 7 December from 10:30-3:30

Venue: Ground floor hall, Kelly St., Kentish Town

Speaker: Victoria Hall and Yvonne Lewis

Description:
The National Trust has received around 200 book collections as part of  its property and
interior collections portfolio over the last hundred years. They range wildly in size and scope of material
content, from medieval manuscripts to modern Penguins and private press books. Many include
decorated papers as part of the contemporary binding or later re-binding of the object. Papers also occur
within a range of other objects, from print frames to furniture. This talk will seek to illustrate a range of
examples, setting them in their historic context.

Presented jointly by Yvonne Lewis and Victoria Hall who first met in the library of Blickling Hall over 25
years ago. Victoria will bring a selection of papers for sale before and after the talk.

The talk will be followed by a wine and nibbles reception.

Cost: £20 for all

No limit on attendees.

Biographies:

Yvonne Lewis: Born in Stockton-on-Tees, Yvonne read History at the University of Warwick BA (Hons),
followed by Librarianship and Information Studies at University College London (PG Dip Lib and MA).
Most recently she has completed a University of London MRes in the History of the Book, and is
currently working on a part-time PhD at the Warburg Institute. She has worked at Lambeth Palace
Library, HM Treasury and Cabinet Office Library, a private collection and the National Trust. Since
graduating she has been actively involved in the committees of CILIP Rare Books and Special Collections
and Library and Information History special interest groups, and most recently a Council member of The
Bibliographical Society. A great believer in education for all, she has had several UCL placement students
over the years, writes, talks and has individual and group visits related to an eclectic mix of themes
around the history of the book as a material object, provenance and the history of collecting and
reading.

Victoria Hall: Born in Yorkshire, Victoria studied History of Art & Architecture at the University of East
Anglia in Norwich & has remained a Norfolk resident. Her first paper marbling studio (under the ‘Victoria
Marbling’ name) was established in Norwich in 1989. An emphasis on historic style patterns quickly
developed, leading to the production of other historic types of decorated paper & a particular interest in
paste papers. Victoria is self-taught, also makes complex modern paste papers & suminagashi, and is a
keen collector in her field. She tutored 4-day short courses at West Dean for over 15 years, has run
DB/SOB Joint workshops, delivered events for SOB branches across the country, and was a presenter at
the 2013 Art of the Book Conference held in Calgary, Canada. As a professional supplier of decorated
papers, enquiries & commissions of all kinds are welcome. “Victoria Hall Hand Decorated Papers” is now
based in the small mid-Norfolk village of Whissonsett where visitors are welcome by arrangement.
