Barry Clark – Beginners’ workshop: Creating a hand-sewn leather journal

September 18 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Leather has long been the premier material for book covers. In this workshop with local bookbinder Barry Clark we will combine this ancient material with two traditional sewing methods – long stitch and link stitch. It requires no glue as the folded paper sections are sewn direct to the cover. Holes are punched into the limp leather cover and sewing through the holes creates a binding that is both highly decorative and functional. Once the basic techniques have been mastered many variations are possible: wrap around covers, sewn-in closures, slit sewing instead of punched holes, as well as alternative stitching patterns. The fee includes the cost of materials, tea/coffee on arrival and a light lunch. This workshop is limited to 12 participants so early booking is advised.
