AGM and talks by Victoria Hall

February 24 @ 11:00 am - 3:30 pm

Speaker: Victoria Hall

The content of both presentations will be a blend of historical and contemporary information and comment. Much of Victoria’s work is informed or inspired by traditional forms and practices. It is this depth of knowledge and awareness which enriches and gives validity to more contemporary projects undertaken. Hopefully the talks will enlighten, entertain & brighten up a February day when we all need an extra boost! There will be lots of PATTERN and lots of COLOUR! Victoria will bring a variety of hand decorated papers for sale on the day.

First talk: The Recognition and Process of Pattern

Some types of decorated paper are extremely obvious, whilst others are not. Using images, handling examples and short videos, a wide variety of different hand decorated papers will be introduced, including marbled and paste papers, discussing methods used to create them and their suitability for various applications whether in a historical or contemporary context.

AGM starting around 12:15. There is no charge to attend only the AGM. Only members may vote at the AGM.

Second talk: A Colourful Career

Victoria’s first large marbled papers were made in the summer of 1988, an experience which led to establishing a workshop in commercial premises a year later. This presentation offers a potted history, a collection of personal insights and highlights of 35 eventful years with illustrations of many more exciting or rewarding projects.

Speaker biography:

Born in Yorkshire, Victoria studied History of Art & Architecture at the University of East Anglia in Norwich & has remained a Norfolk resident. Her first paper marbling studio (under the ‘Victoria Marbling’ name) was established in Norwich in 1989 and offered a wide variety of marbled papers. An emphasis on historic style patterns developed & continuing research led to the addition of further historic types of decorated paper including paste papers. Victoria is self-taught and developed further skills over subsequent years to include complex modern paste papers, suminagashi, and many more. She tutored 4-day short courses at West Dean for over 15 years, has run DB/SoB Joint workshops, delivered events for SoB branches across the country, and was a presenter at the 2013 Art of the Book Conference held in Calgary marking the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists’ Guild (CBBAG). Commissioned works vary to include replicating historic marbled papers and designing original patterns to produce in quantity for Fine Press Books. Her papers are known, collected and sold internationally. ‘Victoria Hall Hand Decorated Papers’ is now based in the small mid-Norfolk village of Whissonsett where visitors are very welcome by arrangement.

No limit on attendees.
