Treasures of Lambeth Palace Library Exhibition: 17 May-23 July 2010
Lambeth Palace Library is one of the earliest public libraries in England, founded in 1610 under the will of Archbishop Richard Bancroft. In celebration of its 400th anniversary in 2010, the Library is opening a fascinating exhibition to the public in the Great Hall of Lambeth Palace.
This seems like a great opportunity to see books that are not normally on display.

Provision of Bookbinding Classes at the University of Brighton
Received from Peter Jones:
Dear colleague, student, former student or interested party,
Re the Provision of Bookbinding Classes at the University of Brighton
Please excuse the catchall nature of the above address; I am trying to contact as many people as possible in a short time.
I am writing to you all to advise you that it has been indicated that the Adult Education Program at the University of Brighton is to be suspended for a year to allow for a review of provision. Should this happen it is feared that it is unlikely to return, but in any case it would break the continuity of provision which many expect and on which many rely.
The bookbinding department has a long and prestigious history and remains one of the few well equipped teaching facilities in the country. Over the years it has provided tuition to a wide spectrum of students from hobbyist to professional, teenage to octogenarian, bookbinder to book artist, and undergraduate to post graduate, thus enabling countless students to fulfill their ambitions. We have run successful summer schools, Saturday art schools, and taster sessions for U3A. The department has an enviable reputation for producing excellent practitioners and has seen over the years at least seven Fellows of Designer Bookbinders pass through its doors, as tutor, student or often both
It is possible that the Faculty can be persuaded to reconsider the position, at the very least keeping the courses open while any review is undertaken. Some of you have already, I know, contacted the university to express your concerns. Thank you. If you would like to contact the university the relevant persons and addresses are given below. I would very much appreciate a copy to myself for the records. We are also mounting a protest on the steps of Grand Parade on the evening of next Tuesday (16-03-2010) from 5.45 to 6.15. We hope the press will be there so the bigger the numbers the better the impact.
If there is anyone else you know who might be interested in expressing their concern then please forward this information.
Regards
Peter Jones (Bookbinding Tutor, Adult Education/Arthouse)

- The Gregynog Press – Discounts on Unbound Publications to SoB Members
Gwasg Gregynog (The Gregynog Press) is a registered Charity, one of whose aims is to promote and encourage the highest standards in traditional book production, which of course, includes fine binding.
In order to encourage the latter, and in pursuit of its charitable aims, it sponsored a Gregynog Fine Binding Prize at last year's SoB Conference, and continues to offer unbound copies of its Special Bindings catalogue at a discounted price to members of both DB and SoB.
In further pursuance of its charitable objectives, the Press is pleased to announce that it has now decided to apply a special discount to unbound copies of all its publications, exclusively to members of DB and SoB. It is hoped that this will make the acquisition of fine books in sheets more accessible to members, and in turn inspire the creation of ever-finer bindings.
