RUDOLF SCHMID

Rudolf was born in 1954 in Munich, Germany. He served his apprenticeship at a large printing house, becoming a master in reproduction photography. As well as being interested in calligraphy and photography, he had a passion for bookbinding and decided to teach himself the craft with the aid of various books.

"My philosophy is that I would not like to be known by a certain style or technique. I like to do one-off bindings. Sometimes it will take me years to find 'my idea of a certain book' and I like the challenge to work with techniques, materials and tools which I never tried and used before. But whatever I use or do, the result must still be a book which the reader likes to take in his hands and read; not just an art object."
