GAVIN ROOKLEDGE

Gavin has been creating and selling work through his company, Rook's Books, since founding it in 1987. He has exhibited, lectured, and held artist-in-residency posts in Europe, Canada, America and the UK.

The majority of Gavin's work tends to be undertaken in leather while his books are often ornamented with metal or wooden details and hand-marbled endpapers. Even the more straightforward of his designs are fairly unusual, with thick leather spines, bronze rams-head bolts, copper rivets, resins, enamels and glass being incorporated into the pieces.

"There was a humanity about the way the piece evolved which made it work. It wasn't planned on a drawing board or conceived in my head, I just made it up as I went along."
