MIDLAND REGION

This Region was founded in 1985 by a group of binders from Nottingham and Derby, led by David Ackrel. It now has around 60 members drawn from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. The regional workshops attempt to cover all four counties. Two, in Linconshire and Lecis, are up and running, the Derbyshire one starts later this year. A Notts workshop is also pending but monthly meetings are Notts based.

MEETING VENUES
Meetings are normally on Friday evenings at 7.30pm and most are held at the Nottinghamshire Archives building in central Nottingham. This is close to the Railway Station and the Broadmarsh Bus Station. About two meetings a year are held in Leicestershire at Loughborough Library.

Nick Wells: Quarter Leather Split Board Binding
Split board binding was traditionally used for library binding and in its extreme form with a spring back for binding ledgers. It is a strong method of binding which many people find easier to execute than case bindings, as the need to FIT the book block and case together is eliminated. It is easier and faster to produce than laced in styles, but slower than case binding. Due to the fact that it is sewn on tapes it could be partly mechanised. There are also different hybrid versions, which will be explored. This style is also good practice for progression to laced in styles as a hollow back is attached, and, with other styles of binding covered in the programme, will provide a complete picture of the methods available and their advantages, limitations, and uses. It will be possible to personalise your book, though that may be by attaching labels or tooling after the workshop, depending on time available. If you are a novice and do not understand much of the above do not worry - this workshop is suitable for novices as well as the more experienced.
