This structure has been around for a few centuries but with little application in contemporary binding in the UK. The French have been using it extensively in their modern work and after this workshop it is hoped participants will begin to experiment with it here.

The first day will be spent learning the basics of stub binding, its mechanics and applications. A fully rounded and backed, cloth or paper-covered binding will be completed before moving on to stub bindings with a bit more glamour on the second day.

Stub bindings are very adaptable and the following are just some of their wonderful advantages: the text block opens flat; they work equally well with either rounded or backed spines or flat backs; they allow elegant bindings to be made from single sections; they eliminate the problem of narrow gutter margins; and they are useful for binding double page spreads where no sewing thread is wanted in the centre fold.

Lori Sauer studied art in the USA and did her bookbinding training at the City Literary Institute with Sally Lou Smith and David Sellars. She is self-employed and teaches at Urchfont Manor College and in Salisbury as well as conducting workshops across the country. She won the DB Bookbinding Competition Silver Medal in 2000, became a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2001, and is a co-founder of The Collective.
