Printmaking techniques have always been used for creating the contents of books, and in recent years have been adapted to embellish covers in the realm of book arts as well as contemporary fine bindings. However, traditional printmaking can involve a lot of specialist equipment and tools which are beyond the reach of many book artists. In this workshop, Janine will introduce a wealth of creative approaches to various printmaking methods and materials and show us how to produce beautiful textures and images using very basic equipment and a few simple tools.
Three traditional techniques will be explored: Drypoint, a similar technique to etching; Collograph, a low relief technique using textures; and Monoprinting, a quick direct painterly technique. Janine will show how to use them in a non-traditional way, combining textures and layers of colour to create both abstract and figurative images on paper, bookcloth and leather. There will also be an opportunity to combine these and other techniques to create and experiment with Mixed Media printmaking. So raid your cupboards for anything that will create a texture and join us for this exciting and contemporary adventure into the world of printmaking and printed surface design.
Janine Pope studied
English at Goldsmiths College, and Textile Design at Leeds University.
She teaches
specialist workshops around the country including Adult Printmaking courses
at Urchfont Manor,
Knuston Hall, Great Missenden and Creative Bookbinding & Printmaking
at Nottingham Trent and De Montfort Universities and the University
of Northampton. She organizes Book Arts activities for the Society of Bookbinders.
