THE GORDON HARTLEY
MEMORIAL FUND
Gordon Hartley
was Chairman of the national Society of Bookbinders
and of Birmingham Region until
his untimely death in November
2007. He was an inspirational figure, having
taught himself bookbinding at the age of about 50, using books and
attending
occasional workshops
and study days. He had retired a year or so before
he died and was intending to become a full-time bookbinder.
His colleagues in the
Society of Bookbinders felt that they
would like to commemorate him by setting up a fund to
support appropriate charitable
work in sympathy with
the aims of the Society. Initially this will consist of a bursary
for a bookbinding student to attend
the Society’s biennial Conference.
This takes place in August and
consists of lectures, demonstrations and workshops with national and
international experts in the field who are also on hand for talk
and
discussion. We are now inviting
applications from suitable students to attend the Conference
at Warwick University from 20th to 23rd August 2009.
All are
most welcome to apply and the
award will be given on merit, but between
equal candidates preference will be given to older students
with a serious interest
in taking up bookbinding, perhaps as a second career,
and also to Society members. There is
no means test as the aim of the award is to encourage the learning
of
bookbinding. Applicants will be expected to produce a
short report on their participation in
the Conference, saying how they have
benefited from it.
Applications
will be looked at in the first
place by the Birmingham Region sub-committee
and details of suitable candidates
will be forwarded to the national Council
for a final decision.
The closing date for applications
is April 15th 2009.
Potential applicants should contact Angela Sutton, Chairman of Birmingham
Region SoB:
