AVLI PERSI FLACCI SATIRARUM - printed in Paris, 1615
Restored by GERALDINE LOUISE THOMAS

This dark tan–coloured full calf binding has paste boards and was sewn on four raised bands. There was evidence of single gilt line tooling on either side of the raised bands. No title was present, although under microscopic examination some minute traces of tooling were discernable. Almost the whole text block was broken down into sections, with spine folds very dirty and many split. There was also a great deal of surface and ingrained dirt and the frontispiece had severe yellow discolouration. There were no endpapers present.

The text block was pulled, leaves surface cleaned and a Ph test taken (Ph5-5.5). All leaves were washed after testing the stability of the ink. All areas of paper loss were infilled with handmade paper and sections guarded with Japanese paper. New endpapers were made and the text block re–sewn on four alum tawed thongs. Two–colour linen thread headbands were sewn, the boards re–laced. The binding was re–backed and re–cornered with dyed archival calf. The binding was re–tooled following the evidence of earlier tooling, and the leather dressed.
